Product Description

The Hone-O-Drive™ solves the problem of achieving the ultimate performance gear ratio combination for both drag racing and daily traffic and highway operation. This unit cures the problem of high engine revs when low rear axle ratio drag race gearing is used. The Hone-O-Drive™ allows fantastic acceleration and hill climbing power in direct drive and greatly increased economy and long engine life in overdrive. This is also ideal for use in off-road vehicles, pick-up trucks, and campers where lower axle ratios are generally employed.

How it Works

With the synchro in one position, the unit locks up for direct drive. Shift the synchro to the alternate position and the incoming drive shaft drives a planetary carrier gear assembly that propels an enveloping ring gear approximately 30% faster. The ring gear drives the rear end pinion gear to reach overdrive speeds.

While it was important to keep the authentic look and feel of the original Hone-O-Drive™, upgrades were made using technologies that simply weren’t available when the Hone-O-Drive™ was first produced. These upgrades and improvements allow the unit to offer performance specifications of 1,000 HP and 1,000 ft-lbs of torque for vehicles up to 8,500 lbs GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) and comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

Strict Quality Standards

Hone-O-Drive™ Overdrives are made to strict quality standards and comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

All Hone-O-Drive™ components are manufactured under rigid inspection to close tolerances, just like the original Hone-O-Drive™, to promote long life and insure interchangablity of parts. The housings are cast using 356-T6 high grade aluminum for strength and light weight performance. The design uses a planetary gear assembly with a synchromesh unit mounted in the custom aluminum housing.

Gears are of high quality steel, heat treated for wear and strength, with helical teeth for smooth, quiet operation. Bearings are anti-friction. Drive components are made of heat treated, stress-proof steel for strength and durability.

Model Selection Guide

Determine Bolt Pattern for Proper Model Selection

These units mount directly to the Ford type 9″ differential housing, replacing the pinion gear bearing housing and using the existing pinion gear, bearings, crush washer, lock-nut, washer, and U-joint yoke.

To determine which models fit your Ford type 9″ differential housing measure the center-center distance between the lower two bolts on your differential housing as shown in Figure 1 below. If this center-center distance is 3-9/16″ then Models B200 and B210 are the ones that fit. If this center-center distance is 3-3/4″ then Models B220 and B230 are the ones that fit.

Determine Lubrication Option

The Models B200 and B230 share oil and lubrication with the Ford type 9″ rear differential. These models are designed to gravity flow the oil from the rear differential into the Hone-O-Drive™ unit for lubrication. These models are for installations where the rear pinion is at or near horizontal to the road surface such as with most muscle cars. Additional oil will need to be added to the rear differential to accommodate the oil needed to lubricate the Hone-O-Drive™ unit once installed to the Ford type 9″ differential housing and oil levels must be checked and oil changes made according to maintenance specifications.

The Models B210 and B220 are designed with an independent oil system and do not share oil or lubrication with the Ford type 9″ rear differential. These models are for installations where the rear pinion is at a substantial angle to the horizontal such as with off-road or lifted vehicles. Oil is added to the Hone-O-Drive™ unit independently from the rear differential and oil levels must be checked and oil changes made according to maintenance specifications separately from the rear differential.

These units are great! I put one in my Ford Bronco that I setup for off road. Handles the off road park trails beautifully and I look really cool driving it around town. Couldn’t be happier.

OK, I got this to put in my Bronco that I customized for the trail. I was skeptical at first but after researching I decided to give it a try. Straight forward to install, had my mechanic friend do it but I think I could have installed it myself. First time I took it out I decided to drive my Bronco to the trail instead of trailering it. Nice being able to run highway speeds and show-off a little. When I got on the trail it worked great. I would recommend the hone-o-drive to anyone. Had a lot of comments at the trail when I drove my Bronco there instead of trailering it.
